SANTANDER ENGLISH CAMP - DAY 2

We woke up at 8 on Tuesday. We had breakfast at 8.30 and then we went on the bus and headed to Santander. We enjoyed the amazing views and landscapes and we even saw some penguins and seals!

El martes nos levantamos a las ocho. Desayunamos a las ocho y media y después montamos en el autocar y nos dirigimos a Santander. Disfrutamos de unas vistas y paisajes fantásticos y pudimos incluso ver pingüinos y focas.

Laura was the leader today and she gave us a lot of information about the city and also about interesting facts like the two fires that destroyed the city in the past. As a consequence, we learnt that Santander hasn’t got many old buildings or monuments left.

Laura fue la líder hoy y nos dio mucha información sobre la ciudad y también sobre datos interesantes como los dos fuegos que destruyeron la ciudad en el pasado. Como resultado, aprendimos que Santander no tiene apenas ningún edificio o monumento antiguo.

Then, we visited the Magdalena Palace. It is a beautiful building and Laura explained the reason why it has so many windows, a total amount of 365! The queen wanted to admire the views from a different angle every day of the year so she asked to have an exact amount of 365 windows available.

Después, visitamos el Palacio de la Magdalena. Es un edificio precioso y Laura nos explicó la razón por la que tiene tantas ventanas, ¡un total de 365! La reina quería admirar las vistas desde un ángulo diferente cada día del año así que pidió tener 365 ventanas disponibles.

Once we finished our guided tour we joined our groups and started to work on some activities while our monitors checked if we could remember some of the most interesting key facts we had previously been told about.

Una vez que terminamos nuestro tour guiado, nos unimos a nuestros grupos y empezamos a trabajar en algunas actividades mientras nuestros monitores comprobaban si podíamos recordar algunos de los datos más interesantes de lo que nos habían contado previamente.

Back in the hostel, we sang our school anthem and then we had lunch and had some free time.

De vuelta en el albergue, cantamos el himno de nuestro colegio y después comimos y tuvimos un poco de tiempo libre.

The activities in the afternoon were centred in the flora. We learnt a lot of new vocabulary like the way to distinguish different kinds of trees and the way to name them in English. We watched a video together and then we played a gymkhana and… Dublin won the game!

Las actividades de la tarde se centraron en la flora. Aprendimos mucho vocabulario nuevo como la manera de distinguir diferentes tipos de árboles y de nombrarlos en inglés. Vimos un video juntos y después jugamos una yincana y… ¡el equipo de Dublín ganó el juego!

The sport we played on Tuesday was baseball. After playing some matches, the monitors gave us our mobile phones and we could finally call home and speak with our families. We can call home from 7.30pm to 7.50pm every day.

El deporte que jugamos el martes fue béisbol. Después de jugar algunos partidos, los monitores nos dieron los móviles y por fin pudimos llamar a casa y hablar con nuestras familias. Podemos llamar a casa todos los días de 19.30 a 19.50.

Then, before dinner (and breakfast, and lunch) we always sing a song so we practice how to ask for things in English: “Can I have a glass, please? Can I have a napkin, please? Can I have a hot dog, please?” We need to ask for everything in English. While we are eating the monitors control that we are speaking English at the table and they give points and dollars to the best team. The USA and Canada teams won yesterday!

Después, antes de la cena (y del desayuno y comida) siempre cantamos una canción para practicar cómo pedir las cosas en inglés: “¿Me puede dar un vaso, por favor? ¿Me puede dar una servilleta, por favor? ¿Me puede dar un perrito caliente, por favor?” Tenemos que pedir todo en inglés. Mientras estamos comiendo los monitores controlan que estemos hablando en inglés en la mesa y dan puntos y dólares al mejor equipo. ¡Los equipos de Estados Unidos y Canadá ganaron ayer!

After dinner we always watch a video together to practice the new vocabulary we learnt during the day and then we go to bed.

Después de la cena siempre vemos un vídeo juntos para practicar el vocabulario nuevo que hemos aprendido durante el día y después nos vamos a la cama.
